Hue is infamous for its lousy weather, so come prepared for lots of rain. The Truong Son Mountains south of Hue block coastal moisture, resulting in misty or drizzly conditions most of the time. The rains typically begin in September and grow steadily worse towards the end of the year. January through March is perhaps best avoided for travel since most of Hue's attractions are outdoors. That being said, the misty conditions add a special ambiance to the old pagodas.
In reference to its regal heritage, Hue is well known throughout Vietnam for its imperial cuisine which is based around menus that were prepared for the emperor and his entourage. If you have the chance, an imperial banquet dinner is a fascinating dining experience. Typical Hue cuisine is quite different from other parts of Vietnam. An emphasis is placed on using light ingredients, epitomised by the ubiquitous fresh spring rolls.
The old city of Hue is a UNESCO World Heritage site for good reason. It was once an imperial city, and has dozens of royal tombs, pagodas, palaces and other intriguing ancient sites worth pondering from the Nguyen dynasty. At the heart of it all is Hue's main attraction, the Citadel and Imperial City complex. You can tour these sites yourself, but an English-speaking guide adds an invaluable dimension to the experience.
Renting a car in Hue is not an easy proposition. You can, however, hire a daily car and driver for a decent price. Once in Hue, it's easy to walk the main tourist sites along the Perfume River on foot, but to see the outlying attractions you'll need the help of a cyclo or taxi. It won't be hard to find one, as they are ubiquitous and the drivers can be pushy.
