Since Hoi An is in central Vietnam, it has a tropical climate with reliably warm temperatures averaging between 25oC and 30oC. The year is broken into distinct wet and dry seasons, with the hottest days experienced in June and July. The dry season runs from February to May, providing lots of sunshine and warmth. This is the best time to visit Hoi An, when it is peak tourism period.
A fun way to get out on the water and see Hoi An and the surrounding countryside is on a boat cruise along the Thu Bon River. This is the river that flows through the city, and boatmen line the banks along Bach Dang Road waiting for passengers. The ride is inexpensive and it's a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.
This family home built in 1802 is a wonderful example of an upper status Mandarin during the reign of Emperor Gia Long. Tran Tu Nhuc served as an ambassador to China, and his home is decorated with some stunning antiques. Check out the ancestral altar room and the drawing room, where the relics are as fine as in any museum.
There is no railway station in Hoi An. The nearest is in Danang, which receives several trains a day from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hue, and Nha Trang. Most travel agents and hotels can book a train ticket for you. Open-tour buses run daily up and down the coast from Danang, Hue (four to five hours) and Nha Trang (nine to 10 hours). It's easy to take a motorbike or taxi to and from Danang via the Marble Mountains, from where you can catch a train onwards.
