The Hong Ngoc I is a cosy, family-run hotel in Hanoi. All rooms are comfortable and managed by warm and friendly staff. The property is well situated for explorers of the Vietnamese capital’s Old Quarter, and its network of narrow winding lanes, its wealth restaurants, and smiling locals.

More expensive than Viet Hotel but worse in terms of staff's attitude and room standards. Our room stank period. The bed linens and pillows stank so bad we didn't use them. Later we figured out why. The windows were not opened and we tried to open them. The view outside room 302 was terrible. It faced another wall and in the space in between there was a plant and pipe. Awful! The TV was old-fashioned and small. When we came back from our day tour on the second day we could not switch on the air con with the controller in the room. Tried to call reception but pressing zero could not get us connected. Looked around for a number to call but there was none. Had to take the lift down. Reception told us to go back to the room - turns out the hotel actually can shut down the aircon when you are not there and it is in a way centrally controlled. Checking out, they claimed that we had took 2 bottles of mineral water from the minibar. I said that in the welcome note or rather room rate note, we were entitled to 2 bottles of complimentary water. They said that we had not booked at the rack rates but booked thru this website so we were not entitled to the complimentary water. This was unfair as I had asked the previous night at the reception about complimentary water and they told us it was in the mini bar - no mention about us not being entitled to the water cos we did not book at the USD 59 rack rate and through the website. Despite our explanation abt their staff's representation to us, they made us pay for the bottles of water. For the day tours, if you book through the hotel, be prepared to have to pay more. Just cross the street, walk a few steps and book at Sinh Cafe for a similar day tour. At least, check out Sinh Cafe's prices before committing to this hotel's. I will never stay in this hotel again. The location isn't great either right in the middle of the old quarters and we got lost in the night. When we checked into Maison D'Hanoi, the contrast was so appalling we swore we would never go near Hong Ngoc1 again. Definitely a one or two star hotel not worth the money.

Wonderful location, near all the shopping and attractions. Breakfast was very good and provided lots to choose from. its a smaller hotel, but had everything we needed and was well maintained. We received a fruit plate everyday and the rooms were well sized (slightly of the small size, but it was really alright). Would definitely stay here agian!

We found this to be a good hotel right in the middle of the busy part of town. The rooms were of a good size, well furnished and well appointed-beds were hard, but this seems the asian way.The staff were extremely helpful with everything and the breakfast was of a good size and plenty of choice. One word of warning-we stayed on the side of the hotel with no elevator-on the fifth floor.it will certainly get you fit!

Dissappointed at being moved to another hotel for 1st night as hotel over booked. This disrupted our holiday and though told it was equivalent it was obviously a much inferior room. I did notice this happening to other travellers on a daily basis. Do not feel honesty prevailed. When finally in room as requested, found it roomy and tastefully decorated.

we had a lovely stay here-although very brief. Staff were friendly and the room was well presented and very clean. We were right in the thick of things when it came to restaurants and nothing was very...
