Located on the northern coast of South America, Venezuela means ‘Little Venice’ and is a former Spanish colony that has since obtained federal republic status. The country is bordered by Brazil to the south, Guyana to the east and Colombia to the west, the Caribbean meanwhile lies north of the coast.

Paradura del Niño
Held on 6 January, Paradura del Niño or Parade of the Children is the Venezuelan celebration of the catholic feast of the Epiphany which acknowledges the time when the three kings visited the infant Jesus in Bethlehem. This festival sees children receiving gifts which they believe are given to them by ‘Los Tres Reyes Magos’ (the Three Kings).

Venezuela has plenty of interesting sights for those not wanting to spend the whole holiday lazing around in the sunshine. Air
Caracas Maiquetía International Airport is situated 26kms north of the city of Caracas and is a modern, two-terminal facility that provides the most significant gateway into and out of the country of Venezuela. Connections are maintained with the USA by major airlines such as Continental, Delta and American Airlines; with Spain by Iberia and Air Europa; with Italy by Alitalia and with France by Air France. The remainder of the international destinations are in South America with Brazil, Mexico, Cuba and Panama among the most frequently served.

The official currency in Venezuela is the Bolvar which is made up of 100 céntimos. Notes are issued in denominations of Bs50,000, 20,000, 10,000, 5000, 2000, 1000, 500, 100, 50, 20, 10 and 5 while coins come in Bs500, 100, 50, 25, 5, 2 and 1, and 50, 20, 10 and 5 céntimos.
