Whirligig: this annual carnival at Seattle Center is for the kids’ enjoyment. They can bounce, glide, slide and ride on super-sized inflatables. Clowns, face painters and many other entertainers transform the Seattle Center into a fun house.

Major League Baseball: there’s nothing that signals the beginning of spring in the US more than baseball. Traditions include the excitement of seeing a live game at the park and eating hot dogs covered in mustard while you cheer on your favourite team.

FringeAct: this special theatre event was created jointly by Seattle Fringe Theatre Productions and ACT Theatre to showcase new plays and new playwrights. More than two dozen local writers are featured, along with their original full-length and solo works. There are also performances aimed at young audiences.

Seafair and Torchlight Parade: a delightful mix of clowns and pirates, ships, drill teams and drum bands, illuminated floats and more are on offer at this event sponsored by the maritime Seafair festival and the Southwest Airlines Torchlight Parade.

Issaquah Salmon Days Festival: crowds of more than 150,000 gather during the last weekend in October and watch as the salmon return to the area’s lakes and streams. More than 300 artists display their works, foods of the world are featured as well as a parade and races are held. Heather Tartan Ball: for the past four decades, the Heather Tartan Ball has provided a memorable evening of Scottish dancing, entertainment, food and a silent auction at the Great Hall at South Lake Union Park.
