San Antonio, the seventh-largest city in the United States and the second-largest city in Texas, serves as a gateway into the unique culture of the American southwest. Considered the ‘Cradle of Texas Liberty’, this city is no stranger to tourism, as more than 26 million visitors arrive here every year to enjoy the historic sites, cosmopolitan art scene and trendy riverside restaurants.

First on a strong front of tourist attractions, the Alamo proudly stands in the heart of San Antonio. Modern Texans equate the Alamo with the victory of the Texas Revolution, and what was began as one of five Spanish missions has transformed into a military symbol of state pride. It now serves as a museum of local history. Other historic areas such as the Casa Navarro Historic Site and the King William area near the city centre also merit a visit.

Most of the city’s attractions are situated on or near the Paseo del Rio, or the River Walk. This intensely successful pedestrian marketplace features upscale restaurants, countless boutiques and laid-back cafés. It leaps to life during the springtime Fiesta celebration, when a colourful parade floats by on the meandering river.

The San Antonio and Beyond prepaid card is a discount pass that grants access to many of the city’s primary attractions and museums. Those wishing to see most of the local attractions can save nearly 50 per cent by purchasing this card online or at the San Antonio Visitor Center. The card is issued in three different forms: a museums pass, a downtown attractions pass, or a super pass (collection of both).
Accommodation is well-established here. In fact, San Antonio boasts more historic hotels than any other city in Texas. Vintage establishments can be found in every price range, with the most sophisticated, upmarket hotels conveniently situated on the Paseo del Rio.From here, it’s possible to reach many of the city’s attractions and restaurants on foot. Booking online is the best way to reserve a hotel room at a discount.
San Antonio is served by its own international airport which receives the bulk of its arrivals from other US destinations. The discount domestic provider, Southwest Airlines, accounts for roughly one-third of the airport’s traffic. The city is also conveniently located at the convergence of three interstate highways, making this an ideal place to tour by hire car.
Temperatures in San Antonio peak in July and August, when it isn’t uncommon for thermometers to read 35°C or more. Wintertime highs drop below 20°C, but even the coldest days rarely involve freezing temperatures. Autumn and spring (when the Fiesta is on) are the most comfortable seasons, when temperatures settle into the mid-20s (°C).

The warmest months in the city are also the wettest months. There is usually a wet season from May to June, with a brief drying period during July. Rains pick up again in August and continue through the autumn months. During this sustained season of intermittent rainfall, May, June and October typically see the greatest precipitation.
