The first colony to settle in Phoenix was founded by Jack Swilling who saw the potential of the area when he passed through it in 1867. One year later, a thriving farming community emerged, which was named Swilling's Mill. The name Phoenix was recommended by Lord Darell Duppa and the new town was officially recognised in May 1868. Jack Swilling became Phoenix's new postmaster.
This interactive, educational centre is extremely popular among children. It boasts over 300 exhibits which are designed for both learning and entertainment. Topics covered include: computers, geology, human physiology and transportation. There is also a planetarium and a large-screen theatre on-site, which are also immensely popular. New Year's Day: a huge parade and annual college football game is held at the Arizona State University Sun Devil Stadium to celebrate the arrival of the New Year. The ground is always packed out, with much of the city in attendance.
The Grand Canyon is just 5 hours from Phoenix by car. Many people choose to stay overnight at the Grand Canyon to get the most out of the trip, but it is possible to fly there and back in a day. This world-famous site is a must-see if you are in the area and taking a plane ride over it promises views and sights which are unequalled anywhere else in the world.
Bus travel in Phoenix is centred on commuters and is of virtually no use to tourists. However, the free Downtown Area Shuttle connects several popular attractions in Phoenix, and is ideal for use by visitors. The Scottsdale Trolley service is useful for shoppers in Phoenix, while for those travelling to destinations outside of Phoenix; Greyhound offers regular coach services to major destinations across the country. Buses arrive and depart from the Greyhound Terminal near the airport.
If you are arriving from outside of America, you will have to complete a customs declaration form. Your duty-free allowance is: 200 cigarettes or 100 cigars; one litre of spirits and personal gifts not totalling more than $100. Many things are banned from being brought into the country such as fresh food and agricultural products; items from North Korea, Cambodia, Libya and Cuba; pre-Columbian artefacts and pornographic material. There are strict regulations on drugs and firearms.
