Airports

Phoenix Sky Harbour International Airport (PHX) can be found just five kilometres southeast of central Phoenix and caters for thousands of travellers every day, who arrive on flights from Europe and throughout America. It is the main gateway into Arizona, offering non-stop services to over 100 cities around the world.

The airport consists of four terminals, which offer extensive facilities catering to the needs of most travellers. Facilities include: banking amenities and ATMs; bureaux de change; a well-equipped business centre; restaurants, cafés and snack bars; shops including duty-free; car hire desks; information desks and public telephones.

The airport has been improved to include facilities for disabled passengers such as allowing wheelchair access throughout, lowered telephones, adapted toilets, allocated parking spaces and on-hand assistance if required.

Transportation from the airport into the city is plentiful, with many people opting to take one of the shared shuttle buses. They travel to and from many hotels in the city centre and offer a cheaper alternative to taking a taxi. Certain hotels offer courtesy shuttle buses which provide door-to-door travel at no cost. You need to arrange this with your hotel in advance of arrival at the airport.

If however you want to take a taxi, you will find them outside each of the terminals. They offer a convenient door-to-door service and as the journey should take no longer than about 15 minutes, prices are often very reasonable.

Limousine companies are also available at the airport, offering the most stylish way to reach your hotel. Limousines travel to and from the airport and can be hired by the hour or day. They are reasonably priced and can be reserved in advance or directly at the ground transportation desk.

It is also possible to rent a vehicle at the airport and drive to Phoenix by yourself. All of the major car hire companies are available at the airport including Alamo, Avis, Budget, Hertz and National.

Phoenix Airport offers extensive parking options for passengers. There are over 6,000 parking spaces spread across four car parks, one located next to each terminal. There is long-term parking, short-term options and dedicated spaces for disabled passengers.

Public Transport

Due to the vast size of the Phoenix metropolitan area and the number of attractions nearby, hiring a car is the best way to travel around, as it is convenient and you will be able to make the most of your days. There are numerous car rental companies to be found across the city as well as at the airport. Phoenix is connected to the West Coast by I-10. Interstate 40 begins in California, where it links with Flagstaff and I-17, continuing south to Phoenix.

Bus travel in Phoenix is centred on commuters and is of virtually no use to tourists. However, the free Downtown Area Shuttle connects several popular attractions in Phoenix, and is ideal for use by visitors. The Scottsdale Trolley service is useful for shoppers in Phoenix, while for those travelling to destinations outside of Phoenix; Greyhound offers regular coach services to major destinations across the country. Buses arrive and depart from the Greyhound Terminal near the airport.

There are no direct rail services that run into Phoenix, making travel by train an impractical option. However, Amtrak offers services to both Flagstaff and Tucson, from where you can board a connecting Amtrak bus for the final leg into Phoenix.

Taxis are available across the city and will take you to all destinations in Phoenix. There are often long distances between attractions however, meaning taxi fares can be quite expensive. Yellow Cab and Scottsdale Cab are both popular taxi companies.
