Philadelphia was once the nation's capital and is also where America declared its independence on the 4th of July, 1776. It is an incredibly historic city, boasting plenty of old charm while also being a major commercial hub and thriving metropolis.
Philadelphia boasts an unending choice of eateries and restaurants, with as much variety in price as there is of the food. The city is home to a myriad of continental and Oriental restaurants as well as Mexican cuisine. There are also places where you can eat an all-American meat-feast.
Mummers Parade: this New Year's Day parade sees performers take to the streets and entertain the young and old. You will find comedians, musicians and artists, which can all be enjoyed while you are munching on a hot dog and a soft Philly pretzel.
Just imagine what it would be like to have been locked up in a 19th century prison. The castle-like exterior of the Eastern State Penitentiary comes across as very imposing. Despite the appearance, it was state-of-the-art in 1827. Before this, prisoners were thrown into one big room, as opposed to the individual cells which you can find here nowadays. It was considered to be a step forward in social change. The prison operated for 142 years and was home to one of America's most notorious criminals, Al Capone, whose cell has been preserved.
Philadelphia International Airport can be found 11kms outside downtown Philadelphia and serves a number of domestic and international airlines. It is the main gateway into the city, seeing major airlines arriving and departing every day. It contains five large terminal buildings, each with their own range of amenities.
