Just imagine what it would be like to have been locked up in a 19th century prison. The castle-like exterior of the Eastern State Penitentiary comes across as very imposing. Despite the appearance, it was state-of-the-art in 1827. Before this, prisoners were thrown into one big room, as opposed to the individual cells which you can find here nowadays. It was considered to be a step forward in social change.
