New York City  Activities

Just to the north of Liberty Island sits one of the city's most stirring sights, Ellis Island. This was the first point of entry for more than 12 million immigrants when they arrived in America between 1892 and 1954. Today, the complex has been restored to its original condition, and visitors can tour the facility exactly as the immigrants did before them. The Main Building's baggage room is the first stop and then visitors climb the stairs to the Registry Room, where millions have waited for their medical and legal processing. The steps involved are well-presented using old photographs and oral histories.
