The Hawaiian island of Maui is as North American as any US mainland destination and yet it maintains a unique character of its own and a considerably more relaxed and laid-back atmosphere than other US cities. For tourists, this is essentially the appeal of this and other islands in the state, along with tropical weather and beautiful golden sandy beaches.

As the second-largest island in the state, Maui has abundant natural and manmade attractions. In the former category, it boasts stunning scenery, including in both coastal and inland areas. The long, pristine beaches are tropical paradises and the biggest draw for many, while the national parks offer miles of unspoilt wilderness and abundant opportunities for hiking and exploring.

Drawing on a rich history and cultural heritage, Maui offers plenty of interesting sightseeing attractions, among which are fascinating old buildings, museums and art galleries. Visitors with interests in the island’s past rarely miss out on gems such as the Hana Cultural Centre and Lahaina Heritage Museum.

The island caters well to visitors of all ages and backgrounds with as much to offer to families with small children as to independent visitors or retirees. Purpose-built attractions such as the Maui Ocean Center and Kula Botanical Gardens offer appeal across the board, while entertainment venues such as cinemas and bowling alleys also provide fun for the masses.

There are excellent dining opportunities to be found across Hawaii, and visitors will enjoy sampling the varied cuisine that is typical of the island. If it’s more familiar fare that’s required, then international restaurants in the larger towns are capable of delivering the goods. Shopping opportunities are equally impressive, with plenty of big malls offering well-known outlets as well as many smaller independent retailers.

Maui receives visitors across the year and caters well to their needs, providing an impressive selection of hotels including big names such as Ritz-Carlton, Sheraton and Westin. Because of the island’s popularity as a holiday destination, booking accommodation online in advance is recommended.

The island has its own airport so is easily reached from the US mainland or from other islands in Hawaii. Public transportation options on the island are limited, and hiring a car is often the best means of getting around.

Maui’s climate is tropical, with warm temperatures across the seasons making it a popular holiday destination all year round. Rainfall is most significant in the north and northeast of the island on account of the prevailing trade winds. The south and southwest regions enjoy dry weather for the best part of the year.
A holiday on Maui can be enjoyed at any time, and when you visit should depend on how hot you like the weather to be. If you enjoy scorching sunshine with temperature highs hitting the upper 20s and lower 30s (°C), then August and September are the best months in which to schedule a trip.
