International Transport

Louisville International Airport (SDF) sees an average of about four million passengers pass through its gates each year, many heading to other domestic destinations or anywhere within a 320km radius of the city.

The airport houses one large terminal building with two main concourse areas, numerous gates and ample facilities. Concourse A serves Continental Airlines, Delta and Northwest Airlines; and Concourse B serves American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, United Express and US Airways

Facilities at the airport include currency exchange desks, ATM machines, telephones, a business centre, postal services, wireless internet access, a range of eateries, a number of shops, left luggage, a family room and car hire. Disabled facilities include dedicated car parking, TDD telephones, wheelchair access throughout and Braille in the lifts.

Ground transportation options include hiring a car and making your own way to your hotel. Many people prefer to do this, as it allows for more flexibility as well as guaranteeing a private journey. The city centre, which is just 10kms away, is easily reached by following the I-65 and I-264 highways. Journey time is only about 15 minutes by car.

TARC buses depart from outside of the terminal at regular intervals throughout the day. Bus fares are excellent value, making public buses the cheapest form of transport at the airport. Airport shuttle buses are also available, which while being more expensive than public buses, still offer good value for money, with the added bonus of direct services to hotels.

Taxis are operated by a number of reputable companies and a flat rate applies for the journey into the city centre. If you are going elsewhere, journeys will be metered. If you would prefer to arrive at your destination in style, Luxury limousine services can be found at the airport, inside the terminal building.

Both long-term and short-term parking is provided for at the airport, with space for over 4,000 cars. There is also economy remote parking which is linked to the airport by shuttle bus.

Public Transport

Louisville is accessible from many destinations across the country, but due to limited public transport options, visiting some destinations is not viable without a car. There are no train services running through the state of Kentucky; however, Greyhound buses run services to destinations across the state on a regular basis.

Hiring a car is an excellent idea and often the most convenient way to travel around the city. Cars can be hired at the airport or from many companies located in the city centre, with all of the major international firms being represented.

Greyhound buses operate routes across the state, but there are destinations which aren’t covered. There is a free trolley service that serves downtown areas from 07:30 until 18:00.

There are countless taxis operating in Louisville that can be ordered by telephone or hailed in the street. They are generally reasonable value for money, although long taxi journeys in the Louisville area can be expensive.
