Kauai's weather, like the rest of Hawaii, is fantastic with balmy days and nights for most of the year. Average temperatures near the coast are around 26oC and there is not much difference between summer and winter averages. Southwest Kauai is generally the driest and sunniest (leeward) side, while the northeast coast is windiest and wettest, being windward.
Waimea Canyon is one of the big highlights of Kauai and is a must-see whether you have a car or not. Those who have hired a car will get the most out of it by taking a drive along State Route 550-State Route 50 from Lihue. The road gets really close at times and the canyon is best seen from the viewpoint near mile marker 11.
Like much of the rest of the Hawaiian Islands, Kauai has awesome scenery, perhaps even more so than the better-known islands. While there are no erupting volcanoes, Kauai has the massive and elusive Mount Waialeale, the wettest place on Earth, which is best seen by helicopter, as well as fantastic beaches, posh resorts and many cultural highlights.
The best way to see Kauai is by car and rentals on the island are relatively cheap. It is the only way to get the most out of Kauai and there is much to see, but be sure to heed restricted areas warnings. Two main highways go from Lihue: Kaumualii Highway (State Route 50) heading west and Kuhio Highway (State Route 56) heading north. Harleys can also be rented.
