International Transport

Indianapolis is home to Indianapolis International Airport, which handles around seven million passengers every year. Some 20 different airlines fly in and out of the airport to more than 100 destinations around the country and farther abroad. The airport’s single modern terminal has all the amenities a traveller may need, such as ATMs, a bank and currency exchange offices. Other facilities include restaurants, shopping and a meeting room with complete business services. An information desk can be found in the Arrivals area.

There are several ways to get from the airport to your destination in the city. Many visitors choose to rent a car at the terminal. The journey between the airport and the city centre is straightforward and well-signed. The Airport Expressway leads into the I-465 loop, which circles the city. If you don’t hire a car, it is best to take a taxi, which can be found outside the Arrivals area. The trip into the city takes between 10 and 15 minutes. For something more luxurious, consider hiring a private limousine. This service can be arranged at the ground transportation centre in the main parking area.

Public IndyGo buses operate at regular intervals from the terminal to various stops in the city centre. The bus is both inexpensive and convenient if you don’t have a lot of baggage. The main bus stop is located next to the ground transportation area.

Parking at the airport is handled in the various car parks, which can accommodate over 10,000 vehicles. Short-term parking is conveniently located next to the terminal building, while economy long-term parking is connected to the terminal by courtesy shuttles.

Public Transport

Public transport in Indianapolis is efficient and quite affordable, but it is limited to the IndyGo bus system. City buses run on heavily travelled routes, but won’t take you everywhere you want to go, which is why you’ll want to rent a car. The city itself is easy to navigate since it’s based on a grid system. Parking in the downtown area is ample thanks to numerous parking lots and garages. Long distance bus service is provided by Greyhound, which connects Indianapolis with hundreds of destinations across the country.

Amtrak trains service Indianapolis from Chicago, Cincinnati and Washington DC. However, there is no train service within the city itself. Getting to Indianapolis by car is easy and straightforward. Interstate 65 runs northeast to Chicago and south to Louisville. Interstate 70 heads west to St Louis and east to Columbus, Ohio, and Interstate 74 goes to Cincinnati to the southeast.

You won’t really need a taxi to get around the downtown area, as it is easily explored on foot. But to get between distant neighbourhoods, a taxi is very convenient. Unlike most other cities, you cannot hail a taxi in the street. You must call a taxi company and arrange to be picked up at your location. However, cabs often line up at downtown hotels, and you can hire them on the spot. Yellow Cab is one of the most reputable companies in town. Phone: 1 317 487 7777
