You’ll likely be flying to Honolulu, arriving at the Honolulu International Airport located four miles (6.5kms) west of the city. Most of the major US airlines and many other international carriers fly regularly into Honolulu, especially from Asia. Its spacious terminal has a full range of services and amenities for passengers including banking facilities, airline lounges, business centres and information booths.

Many of Honolulu’s nicer hotels provide private airport transfers, but you need to arrange this before your arrival. The city’s public transport network TheBus runs between the airport and Waikiki if you are travelling light, and a number of private shuttles and taxis provide 24-hour door-to-door service. Airport Waikiki Express is the cheapest shuttle of the lot. Uniformed attendants stand outside the Arrivals area to helpfully direct you to the transport of your choice. All the major car rental companies have offices at the airport if you prefer to drive yourself.
Honolulu’s efficient public transport network called TheBus is the best way to get around this city and the rest of Oahu. There are 68 routes and 4,000 stops on its schedule, and fares are cheap. TheBus runs virtually around the clock. Its most popular route is between Waikiki and Ala Moana Centre, with buses coming and going every 15 minutes during the day and every 30 minutes after dark. The Visitors Pass is the best transportation deal on Oaha, allowing you to travel anywhere on the island for a fixed fee for four days.

Another fun way to get around Honolulu is on the Waikiki Trolley. This charismatic open-top vehicle runs in a loop around downtown Honolulu and Waikiki stopping at 12 useful sites. TheBus operates from 08:30 to 21:30 every day, hitting its stops every 40 minutes. Commentary by the driver provides a bit of information on the attractions you pass. Both one-day and four-day unlimited travel passes are sold. Taxis are available island wide 24-hours a day. Fares aren’t cheap, but a taxi is the most convenient way to get around Oahu. Many of the drivers are multilingual.

All the major car hire firms have offices in Honolulu and at the airport. Having your own car is the ideal way to explore Oahu, as some of the most beautiful places are located well outside of Honolulu. Driving conditions, however, can be very crowded as there’s only a few roads handling all the island’s traffic.
