A world apart from it all in heart of the Pacific Ocean, the Hawaiian archipelago constitutes the southernmost state in the US. Known for perennially comfortable temperatures and warm waters that teem with surfers in the winter months, Hawaii sees very little change between seasons. Originally discovered by intrepid Polynesian explorer-colonists, Hawaii was revealed to the Western world by the 18th-century exploits of Captain James Cook.
The unique system of lava tubes and volcanic shelves below the surface of Hawaii's waters harbour an amazing spectrum of aquatic life. Coral reefs, green sea turtles and diverse populations of tropical fish are accessible to divers and snorkellers alike. Some of the best snorkelling spots in the islands include Kealakekua Bay on the Big Island; Hanauma Bay on Oahu; Molokini Crater Nature Preserve on Maui; and the Na Pali Coast on Kauai.
Often cited as the event that officially drew the US into WWII, the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour took place in December of 1941. More than 1,100 Americans died in the attack, most of whom were buried here at sea. Today's visitors come to see the USS Arizona Memorial, which is accessible only by ferry. Phone: +1 808 422 0561.
Visitors arriving in Hawaii by air are likely to be routed through Honolulu International Airport. As a gateway into the islands, Honolulu Airport is well-connected to neighbouring islands through a network of inter-island connections. In fact, tourists flying between islands may find that they must briefly layover in Honolulu (even if Oahu is out of the way) before continuing on to their destination.
Visitors will find mainstream American etiquette relatively informal. Greetings consist of a simple handshake and a smile, and most people prefer to operate on a first-name basis. Americans are known for their directness, and this habit of getting straight to the point is not intended to offend. Locals practice a unique blend of local and mainland culture, and this cultural exchange can be a bit precarious at times. With this in mind, it is best to avoid broaching political topics, particularly as it pertains to Hawaiian sovereignty.

This month's lucky winner is Mr. Laith Addabbas who lives in Jordan.
