Although Fort Myers has high crime figures for murder and robbery, tourists are unlikely to happen upon grief in tourist areas as long as they remain vigilant. Keeping an eye out for pickpockets is advised, as is taking care while driving and not parking on city streets at night.

English is the official language of the US and is the everyday language for most residents in Fort Myers. There is a noticeable Hispanic population here also, although using English in every circumstance will not be a problem.

American customs permits the following duty-free allowances for those aged 21 years and over: 200 cigarettes, or 50 cigars, or two kilograms of tobacco; one US quart of liquor (0.95 litres); and gifts up to the value of US$100.

Fort Myers’s residents are easygoing as with elsewhere in the state and you are unlikely to offend anyone as long as you use common sense. Although it is a coastal city, walking around downtown Fort Myers in nothing but beach attire is not recommended. Tips are expected for just about every service you will need.

European Union nationals need to fill out a form requesting a visa at least 72 hours before they plan to travel to the US. You may need to show evidence of funds and an onward ticket. Canadians also require a passport to enter the US.
