Cautions

Charlotte is generally a very safe place for tourists to visit. However, as with all tourist destinations, you should always use your common sense when it comes to guarding your valuables. Pickpockets and opportunist thieves commonly target unsuspecting tourists who flash money around and are careless with their belongings.

Electricity

110V, 60Hz, all plugs are two-pronged.

Health

There are no serious health risks to be aware of when travelling to North Carolina and medical facilities are excellent. However, it is important to remember that medical care can prove to be very costly if you don’t have insurance. If you are not insured, you may find that—with the exception of emergencies—treatment may not be given.

Language

The official language of the US is English.

Currency

The US uses US dollars (US$), with one dollar being equivalent to 100 cents.

Customs

You should always fill out the custom declaration form before entering the US. Fresh food, agricultural products and certain merchandise from Cambodia, Cuba and North Korea are all forbidden. You are allowed to bring in 200 cigarettes and one litre of spirits, although you must be over 21 years old.

Etiquette

Americans are generally very friendly and welcome visitors. When you visit Charlotte, always make sure you are polite. Smoking is not permitted in public places and it is considered bad manners to be overly drunk. There is no strict dress code, although it is wise to dress up if you are going to a formal function or restaurant.

Visa and Passports

European Union nationals need to fill out a form requesting a visa at least 72 hours before they plan to travel to the US. You may need to show evidence of funds and an onward ticket. Canadians also require a passport to enter the US.
