Wing Haven Gardens and Bird Sanctuary
First opened in 1927, this large enclosure can be found in the centre of a residential neighbourhood. Over 142 species of bird have been seen in this garden, which was once just a clay field. The founder was a local lady who loved birds and it has developed over time. During the springtime, many birds return from their winter migration and the gardens are at their most beautiful.

Carolina Raptor Center
This educational centre promotes environmental education as well as the conservation of birds of prey. It can be found in the Latta Nature Preserve, near Charlotte. There are many nature trails found in the centre as well as aviaries, shops, a museum and gardens.

Botanical Gardens and Sculpture Garden
These stunning gardens boast orchids, cactuses, carnivorous plants and mini rainforests. They are open to visitors and are located in the Van Landingham Estate. The estate was built in 1913 and is a stunning example of local architecture. Other highlights include the cedar and Cyprus trees which can be found throughout the gardens.

Reed Goldmine State Historic Site
This historic site is where the first nugget of gold was found in the US. This nugget is located at a museum onsite along with the displays tracing the history of gold mining in the region. Lessons on how to pan for gold can be taken, depending on the season, and there is the chance to embark on a walking tour of the gold trails.
