New Year's Day: a national holiday and a day for families to get together and recover from the night before. Crowds can be seen gathering to watch the L-Street Brownies (a group of elderly swimmers, many in their 80s and 90s) take the annual plunge in the icy waters at South Boston's Carson Beach.
You can join a whale cruise off the New England coast, available from April to November. The cruises gather at the major feeding grounds in the most famous whale-watching destinations. Even a fleeting glimpse of one of these mammals is a thrilling and memorable experience. Many species can be seen including: finbacks, humpbacks, minkes and right whales. Cruises are operated by several companies including the New England Aquarium. The World Wildlife Fund named Massachusetts as one of the world's top ten whale-watching spots.
Public transit in Boston is extremely convenient and generally inexpensive. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA or the 'T' for short) operate the transport network in the city. It is the fourth largest transit system in America and consists of the subway, bus, water shuttle and commuter rail.
In both dress and manners, Americans are often less formal than many Europeans, although normal business courtesies should still be observed. A brief and friendly handshake is usually the customary greeting. People are usually introduced using first names.
