As the largest city (although not the capital) in Maryland and the state's major cultural and industrial centre, Baltimore is a destination that maintains a strong relationship with the sea and its waterways. Historically, the city owes much to the exploitation of its proximity to viable shipping routes, the legacy of which is distinctly evident in its present status as a busy cargo port.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration Parade: on 16 January sees the city celebrating the famous civil rights activist with an extravagant parade that commences at the Martin Luther King Boulevard and slowly makes its way across the city. Live music, floats and singing are all integral parts of the parade.

Baltimore Washington International Airport (BWI) is the main gateway into Baltimore. It has regular international flights connecting many of the world’s most significant cities, while regional airlines provide flights within the Maryland area and the surrounding states.
