International Transport

Albuquerque International Sunport Airport is the main gateway into the city and lies just six kilometres outside of the city centre. It sees over six million passengers pass through its gates every year, making it the busiest and largest commercial airport in the state. There are a number of flights connecting to states throughout the country, many of which can provide worldwide connections

It is a single terminal facility offering excellent facilities such as bureaux de change kiosks, ATMs, a well-equipped business centre and meeting rooms, post offices, numerous eateries, coffee shops and vending machines, a variety of shops and excellent facilities for passengers with disabilities.

Car hire is available, with all of the main international companies being represented at the airport. These include: Advantage, Alamo, Avis, Budget Rental, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National and Thrifty.

Albuquerque Airport is just a short drive from the city centre and is clearly signposted the entire way. When there is not too much traffic, the journey time is approximately 10 minutes.

Local buses travel from the airport to the city centre, with longer-distance destinations reachable by coach services. Buses leave to and from the city centre regularly and are timed to coincide with departures and arrivals. A number of different shuttle buses can be found at the airport, which offers door-to-door services to the city and surrounding towns.

Taxi ranks can be found outside the airport’s grounds and offer a very convenient way to reach your destination. They are relatively good value for money, as there are a number of companies vying for trade. If you want to arrive at your hotel in style, limousine services can be arranged, with services operating day and night. Although very stylish, these limousines are surprisingly affordable.

There is indoor and outdoor parking available for both short-term and long-term stays. There is also a four-storey garage which offers parking for approximately 3,500 cars.

Domestic Transport

There is a limited bus network which operates services across the city. Services stop running at 21:00 and do not cover the entire major tourist sights therefore are not entirely suitable for visitors.

The widespread city is difficult to navigate without a car and the simple layout of the roads makes driving very easy and therefore hiring a car for the duration of your stay a necessity. If you prefer not to drive but still want the privacy of your own car, metered taxis are available and can be hired from designated taxi ranks.

Amtrak operates the Southwest Chief, which travels between Chicago and Los Angeles, but there is no train or metro network covering different areas of the city. Albuquerque's train station can be found in the downtown area.

If you enjoy the outdoors and want to keep fit while on holiday, Albuquerque has one of the most extensive bikeway systems in the country, which offers a whole host of bike routes and paths, providing bike riders with scenic alternatives to travelling by car.
