Top Things to See

Kusadasi is a tourism behemoth, with cruise ships docked at its harbour and hoards of suntanned holidaymakers swarming its beaches and streets. The old town district is a lot of fun for its bustling scene, shops, bars and eateries, but the real beauty of this ancient land is found outside of town at historic sites like Ephesus and Priene. The island of Samos is another relaxing alternative to busy Kusadasi, and to experience the undiluted natural side of this region head straight to the Dilek National Park.

Dilek National Park
This park, 30kms south of Kusadasi, is the place to go for unspoilt beaches, peaceful relaxation and walks through the mountainous pine tree interior. Its beaches are definitely the best in the area, though the facilities are basic. Icmeler Koyu is the nearest beach to the entrance, and thus the most crowded. Head deeper into the park to Aydinlik Beach, Kavakli Burun, or Karasu Beach for a real taste of Aegean isolation.

Ephesus
The main historic site in the region, and one of the most famous ancient cities in the world, is Ephesus. This 2,000-year-old city is just minutes from Kusadasi, and is one of the best-preserved ruined cities on Earth. It was a Roman capital in Asia, and the site of numerous important events at its peak. The Temple of Artemis, Basilica of St John, and House of Virgin Mary are highlights, and the neighbouring Ephesus Archaeological Museum puts everything in perspective.

Old Town Kusadasi
Kusadasi’s old town district is a charming place, full of narrow cobblestone streets and charismatic old buildings. It’s also the nexus of nightlife, shopping and eating so don’t expect a tranquil time-forgotten village scene. The main Grand and Orient bazaars are here, as well as Bar Street, Club Caravanserai, and lots of other fun spots. Summers are definitely hectic, but during the winter season the town has a decidedly calm atmosphere.

Pigeon Island
One of the eye-catching landmarks of Kusadasi is the solitary rock that sits astride its harbour, called Pigeon Island. A promenade connects the tiny island to the town, but it’s still a wonderfully relaxing place to hit the beach or enjoy a meal with panoramic views of Kusadasi. The private beach club here is one of the best in town, and its restaurants are also up to snuff.

Priene
This ancient Greek city was the first in history to be built using a grid layout. At its peak around 300 BC it was an important centre of the Ionian League. The hilltop Temple of Athena is a real stunner, as is the Senate House located in the town. There is a wealth of well-preserved architecture to enjoy at this quiet archaeological site.

Samos
This classic Greek island is just across the water from Kusadasi, making an ideal daytrip if you want a taste of Greek culture. Its harbour town of Vathy is charming, and the interior mountains ideal for short walks. Samos is most famous for its wine and ouzo. The island also contains several traditional villages and ruins such as the Roman Baths in Pythagorion.
