This Tunisian town wows visitors with its deep sense of history, as well as its chic cosmopolitan side. Explore its ninth-century walls, and rare Arab-era Ribat watchtower to keep on the lookout for lurking pirates, shop in old marketplaces, or take walk down a shady promenade with modern structures. The town’s namesake is a monastery built by Muslims in 797, which offers a great museum of Islamic art and artefacts. A short ride south of town is Uthina, which has a large amphitheatre dating from the second century AD, and Roman villas with beautiful which have mosaic floors.
