Based on archaeological evidence it appears that the area in and around Rayong was first settled by the Khmer around 1500 BE (Buddhist era). A number of Khmer-style ruins have been uncovered in nearby towns such as Ban Don, Amphur Ban Khai and Tambon Cherng Nern, testifying to the early presence of the mighty Khmer. The first mention of the town in Thai annals came during the reign of Ayutthaya's King Somdej Lhra Maha Dhammaraja during the late Ayutthaya era in 2113 BE.
Rayong is one of the lesser-travelled regions of Thailand when it comes to outdoor recreation. With more than 100kms (62 miles) of coastline, beach and water activities are found everywhere you turn. Head offshore and some of the small islands offer excellent scuba diving and snorkelling, while land-based fun centres around hiking in the national parks and riding horses. Golfers will be happy to learn that Rayong has some of the best courses in the region.
New Year: Thais enthusiastically celebrate the Western New Year even though they have their own Thai New Year in April. While Rayong may not be the most buzzing place to party, visitors can find an active scene on Koh Samet or at the beach town of Pattaya.
This bustling fishing port is the gateway to popular Koh Samet and the regional hub for Rayong's seafood industry. Although most travellers breeze through Ban Phe on their way to the islands, this traditional Thai coastal town is worth a day or two of exploration. The streets are narrow and lined with classic fisherman houses, many of which sell trinkets and handicrafts. Besides watching life pass by, the highlight in Ban Phe is indulging in the wonderfully fresh seafood found in its many seaside restaurants.
Although virtually no one flies directly to Rayong, there is a small airport nearby, the Rayong U-Tapao International Airport. Bangkok Airways operates a single daily flight from Phuket, but that doesn't help many travellers. Orient Thai Airlines reportedly runs a flight from Bangkok's airport to U-Tapao, but it's best to check the availability of flights in advance as Rayong is not a popular or sustainable air route.
Dining in Thailand is a casual affair. Thais rarely get dressed up to go out to eat, and Rayong's beachside atmosphere makes this even more emphatic. This relaxed attitude towards eating out is also reflected in the woeful lack of service in restaurants. Don't expect Western-style levels of attention from waiting staff and you won't be disappointed. If you need something, simply beckon your waitress with a friendly wave of the hand.
