Airports

Although virtually no one flies directly to Rayong, there is a small airport nearby, the Rayong U-Tapao International Airport. Bangkok Airways operates a single daily flight from Phuket, but that doesn’t help many travellers. Orient Thai Airlines reportedly runs a flight from Bangkok’s airport to U-Tapao, but it’s best to check the availability of flights in advance as Rayong is not a popular or sustainable air route.

If you are arriving internationally or from another region of Thailand, you will probably fly into one of Bangkok two airports, Suvarnabhumi International Airport or Don Muang Airport. From these airports it is easy to catch a bus to Rayong from Bangkok’s Southern Bus Terminal, a journey of about two hours. Alternatively, there are plenty of airport buses heading to Pattaya, from where you can catch another bus to Rayong.

Public Transport

Most travellers arrive in Rayong by long-distance coach. The town is a regional hub for buses from the north, northeast and east of Thailand so it is easy to get to Rayong from Bangkok, Nong Khai, and Chiang Mai. Buses from Bangkok depart from the Ekamai Bus Station every 40 minutes from 04:00 until 22:00 daily. Make sure you get on an air-conditioned bus and not the slow local bus unless you’ve got a lot of time to spare.

Another popular way to travel around Thailand is by rental car. There are five routes to Rayong, ranging from fast to slow and scenic. From Bangkok you can simply stay on Sukhumvit road, which eventually terminates in the heart of Rayong. The Bangna-Trat road is probably the fastest route, as it is a major motorway. Highways 344 and 36 provide more leisurely and scenic ways to reach Rayong, as they pass through smaller towns along the way.

Once you reach Rayong, there are red truck taxis (songthaew), motorcycle taxis and tuk-tuk to provide transportation around the town and to outlying destinations. Local buses offer a convenient way to travel to Ban Phe and further along the coast although they are slower than taxis. The fares for all transport around Rayong are very cheap.
