Mist-cloaked Mae Hong Son, in far northwestern Thailand, is famous for its rugged beauty, Shan people, hilltribes and elegant Burmese- and Lanna-style Buddhist temples. Need a place to spend the night? Let HotelTravel.com find a hotel room for you.

Travelling to the province is only really recommended during the months of November through to March, the dry season, as due to the many unsealed roads in the area, travel becomes increasingly difficult from June to October, the wet season. During the cool periods it is advisable to pack a few winter woolies as the nights can become bitterly cold.

Mae Hong Son is the small provincial capital of the province of the same name, located high up in the northwest of Thailand, with Myanmar close by to the north and west. The town is surrounded by misty mountains and is characterised by its cool climate, laid-back feel and Thai and Shan (Thai Yai) peoples, as well as Lisu, Lahu, Hmong, and Karen hill tribe inhabitants.

The main attraction of Mae Hong Son is its lazy feel and remoteness. The picturesque lake and hilltop temple are highlights, while the surrounding area is packed full of interesting natural and cultural attractions. The hill tribes that inhabit the region add colour to any trip to Mae Hong Son.

Mae Hong Son Airport is one of the smallest airports in Thailand and is located right in the city within walking distance of the main street, the lake and most inner-city guesthouses. The airport is not big on facilities but receives plenty of flights every day with Thai Airways and PB Air.
