Airports Mae Hong Son Airport is one of the smallest airports in Thailand and is located right in the city within walking distance of the main street, the lake and most inner-city guesthouses. The airport is not big on facilities but receives plenty of flights every day with Thai Airways and PB Air.
Thai Airways operates four flights a day from Chiang Mai to Mae Hong Son at 10:00, 12:50, 14:55 and 15:40. The journey time is 1 hour, 10 minutes. You can also arrive here direct from Bangkok with PB Air, although the most common option is to fly from Chiang Mai.
The best thing about flying to Mae Hong Son, other than the convenience, is the amazing scenery and landing. The approach to the airport cuts through a swathe of mountains and makes for a superb flying experience.
Other options for getting to Mae Hong Son include taking the bus. Regular, non-air-conditioned buses depart from Chiang Mai regularly and travel via Pai, while air-conditioned VIP bus tours and minibuses are also available. It is also possible to hire a car in Chiang Mai and drive the six-hour, scenic route to Mae Hong Son.
Public Transport
Mae Hong Son is a small town and all the interesting areas can be reached on foot. Some of the better out-of-the-way hotels and guesthouses offer free transport to and from the town and airport for guests.
If you don’t fancy walking or find the stroll up to the main temple tough, tuk-tuk (motorised three-wheelers) can be found outside the main market in the town centre for short or long trips within and around the town.
Motorcycles and bicycles are other viable forms of transport within the town and most guesthouses rent them out by the day for a reasonable fee. The roads are hilly in this region and local drivers can be reckless so exercise caution when driving.
