The subtropical climate of Koh Lanta is dictated by the annual monsoon, which brings heavy consistent rains to the region from May through October. During this rainy season, as it's known, temperatures are hot and humid, averaging 32oC. The seas are also very rough and swimming becomes more dangerous. Many of the smaller resorts on the island may close up entirely for a couple of months as tourist numbers drop significantly and sea travel can be frequently delayed by rough seas. But not every day is cloudy and rainy and room rates are much lower during the rainy season, so it may be worth a chance if you aren't coming specifically to go scuba diving.
The small islands that dot the Andaman Sea around Koh Lanta and Krabi offer some of the country's finest snorkeling and diving sites. On Koh Lanta itself, the southern tip of the island offers the best environment, but there are much nicer sites around so you need to take a boat to get to the really good stuff. For snorkeling, the best spots are around Ko Rok and the Emerald Cave, both easily reached as a daytrip by boat.
New Year’s Day: although Thais traditionally celebrate the Buddhist New Year (Songkran) in April, they still take the opportunity to party with the rest of the world on New Year’s Eve.
One of the nicer islands in the Mu Koh Lanta National Park group is Koh Rok. Actually made up of two small islets connected by a sand bar at low tide, Koh Rok Nai comprises limestone cliffs, pristine beaches and untouched coral reefs interspersed among underwater boulders. Its twin sister, Koh Rok Nok, is better known for its wonderful shallow coral reefs which are perfect for snorkeling and soft white beaches. Most resorts on Koh Lanta can arrange a boat to the island for an afternoon, so if you've never been to a deserted tropical island, this is your chance.
More visitors tend to fly into the busier Phuket International Airport since it offers daily flights from 19 airlines servicing a number of regional international destinations. The only drawback is that it is quite far from Koh Lanta, so you will need to arrange transportation. You may be able to save a bit of money on your air ticket, but the extra time required may not be worth it. There is an airport information booth to help you find the easiest way to Koh Lanta (tel: +66 076 327 2307).
There is very little to worry about when you visit Koh Lanta. Crime is virtually nonexistent here and violence is almost unheard of. You won't need to keep an eye out for pickpockets or scam artists, but be careful with valuables in your bungalow. Always carry your cash and passport with you unless your resort has a safe. Things often go missing from bungalows while you're out and about, as there are always opportunistic thieves lurking around every beach.
