During the reign of King Naresuan in the Ayutthaya era, Trat province (which includes Koh Chang) was originally called Baan Bang Pra. The name Koh Chang, meaning Elephant Island, comes from island's shape, which resembles the head and trunk of an elephant.
The school is located at the southern end of Whitesands Beach. Here monkeys are taught how to pick coconuts and fruit from trees in order to secure their survival. The most abundant species in Koh Chang is the curious red-tailed Macaque. For more information, contact the Koh Chang animal foundation at +66 9 042 2347.
Koh Chang Yutthanavi Day: is held in late January at the Koh Chang Yutthanavi Memorial on Laem Ngop. The event commemorates the bravery of the Royal Thai Navy’s battle against the French on 17 January 1941. Festivities include merit-making and tribute rites and there is an exhibition by the Royal Thai Navy.
Pamper yourself in a spa. There are plenty of spas to indulge in after a hard day on the beach. Places such as the Koh Chang Grand Orchid Resort and Spa offer traditional Thai-styled buildings. The Aiyapura Resort and Spa provides massage treatments and the Aana Resort and Spa's facilities are set among swaying coconut trees and a fine view of the Klong Prao area. At the VJ Hotel and Health Spa, treatments target long-term health while the Koh Chang Resort and Spa has facial massages and treatments, using successful traditional approaches.
During the day, you can catch a pickup taxi, which is fitted with two rows of seats on the back and a roof rack on its route around the main island loop. The fares are comparatively expensive by Thai standards and are set by the local administration. These taxis are also waiting at the Dan Kao Pier. There may be no taxis available at the Dan Kao Ferry-Pier. If you arrive here without a vehicle you may have to cover the 400 metres to Dan Kao Pier on foot. Small motorcycles are available fro rent at many outlets around the island for a few dollars a day. The main road almost circles the island and plans are afoot to complete the loop in the near future. Cars are also available for hire and most hotels can help with renting one. Pick ups and 4x4s are recommended, given that some roads may be in bad condition, especially near Lonely Beach.
Entry into Thailand requires a passport valid for at least six months from the date of entry. If your passport expires while in Thailand, be sure to obtain a new one before arriving or you may be refused entry. 30-day visas on arrival are available at airports and border crossings to nationals of 41 countries. 60-day tourist Visas are available by applying at any Thai Embassy or Consulate before travelling. As visa regulations are in flux and can always change, it is wise to check with the nearest Thai Embassy in your home country or visit.
