Khao Lak’s remote location 100kms north of Phuket has always made it a destination for those seeking quiet relaxation. The beaches are ideal for long walks and the warm clear water perfect for swimming. Within a short drive are several excellent national parks if you want to explore tropical rainforests, waterfalls, exotic wildlife and hot springs. Scuba divers and snorkellers will think they’ve found heaven after experiencing the underwater splendors at the Surin and Similan Island Marine Parks, both considered world-class dive sites.

New Year’s Day: Khao Lak does its best to put on a good time at the handful of bars along the main street and at most of the resorts.

Khao Lak is one of southern Thailand’s premier natural recreation areas; with more activities on offer than most visitors will have time to fit into their trip. The lovely Andaman Sea may be the obvious starting point for most sights, with plenty of picture-perfect beaches, snorkelling and diving sites. But don’t overlook the slew of national parks that are within easy striking distance of Khao Lak. These parks offer a rare chance to explore what remains of Thailand’s virgin tropical rainforests, replete with exotic animals, gorgeous natural scenery and the fantastic limestone formations unique to this region. For any kind of urban experience, you’ll need to head 90 minutes south to Phuket Town or north to the old tin mining town of Takuapa. But most visitors quickly fall into the languid pace of life in Khao Lak, enjoying the beautiful beaches and trying to decide what next to order off the menu.

The nearest airport to Khao Lak is in Phuket, about 75kms to the south. Although Phuket is an international airport, most of the flights arrive from Bangkok, so if you are arriving from abroad, you’ll probably fly into Bangkok’s new Suvarnabhumi Airport first.
