Just three hours from Bangkok, the greatest appeal of the western Thai town of Kanchanaburi is its accessibility, making it an ideal destination for a weekend trip. The town offers a mixed selection of attractions with its World War II (WWII) history its most famous drawing card. With stunning national parks in the Kanchanaburi province adding to the appeal, it's not difficult to see why this small town attracts both international and Thai tourists alike.
During the construction of the infamous ‘Death Railway,’ a Dutch prisoner of war discovered a burial site which historians later deemed to contain items dating back to Neolithic times. Situated around 22 miles (35kms) from the town centre, the Ban Kao Museum was built close to the original site and now houses many of the items found. Visitors are able to view pots and other earthenware items, remains of tools and weapons, jewellery fashioned from the bone of animals and human skeletal remains. Phone +66 3465 405.
New Year’s Day:although Thai New Year isn’t celebrated until mid-April, the Gregorian New Year is nevertheless celebrated across the country. This day sees fireworks and festivities at the river and other key locations, with plenty of drinking and good spirit shared between locals and tourists. The following day is a chance to sleep off the excesses of the previous night before getting together with family and friends.
Located some 40 miles (65kms) northeast of the town, Erawan National Park comprises 340 square miles (550 square kilometres) of some of Thailand’s finest scenic natural beauty. The highlight of the park is the multi-tiered waterfall that is popularly considered one of the most impressive in the country. There are opportunities for bathing in the natural pools that lie at the bottom of each tier of the falls. The park also has plenty of walking trails. Bicycles can be rented at the park entrance, but as the terrain is quite challenging there are limited areas for riding.
Suvarnabhumi International Airport is Bangkok's chief international facility and the closest airport to Kanchanaburi. The airport is situated 18 miles east of downtown Bangkok and is the principle gateway to the country with the majority of flights landing here and only a small number flying direct to other Thai cities from overseas destinations.
Thai social etiquette is complicated and can take a lifetime to learn. However, the Thais are very tolerant towards visitors and will not expect you to be aware of all their social customs. There are a few basic dos and don'ts that should be adhered to while holidaying in Kanchanaburi.
First and foremost is the country's love of their king. Any words or actions that might be deemed disrespectful to the king are contrary to Thai law and the offender risks imprisonment. Similarly offensive is behaviour that is disrespectful of religion.
