Airports

Suvarnabhumi International Airport is Bangkok’s chief international facility and the closest airport to Kanchanaburi. The airport is situated 18 miles east of downtown Bangkok and is the principle gateway to the country with the majority of flights landing here and only a small number flying direct to other Thai cities from overseas destinations.

The airport is a relatively new facility, having opened in September 2006 and is a major Southeast Asian hub, serving over 85 airlines and more than 32 million passengers annually. A single compact terminal handles all aspects of air travel and includes seven levels and seven concourses. Departures are handled on level 4 and Arrivals on level 2.

The terminal building offers a good selection of facilities which include: information desks, ATMs and bureaux de change, numerous restaurants and cafés and a myriad of shops, both duty-free and duty-paid. Internet access is available including Wi-fi connections for laptop users, while a number of different telephone services are available including international calls and Thai mobile network SIM cards.

There are both public and private buses operating to the city from the airport’s Transport Centre, which can be reached via a shuttle service from level 1 of the terminal. Taxis can be hired from the same place or from directly outside the terminal. Visitors should be sure to use registered taxi services only and decline the service of any driver who insists that the meter is out of order.
