The small resort community of Hua Hin is situated on a picturesque curving bay of the Gulf of Thailand, and has been a favourite of Thai tourists for decades. Although its popularity with western tourists has increased by the year, it's still frequented more by Thai nationals than foreigners. The main reason for this is that Hua Hin has long been a popular holiday destination for members of Thailand's royal family.
Most of the better hotels and resorts feature facilities for playing tennis. Although most reserve their courts for paying guests, some allow non-residents to play for a fee. Equipment and lessons are available, but it's a good idea to try reserving a court and equipment at least a day or so in advance. The early morning and late afternoon are the best times to play, as the temperatures are more pleasant and the sun isn't too strong.
New Year’s Day: on 1 January there’s a range of activities on offer to welcome in the New Year from the uniquely Thai traditional festivities to typically Western traditions. As the sun comes up, Buddhist monks welcome the dawn and the faithful make merit by giving alms to monks.
During the reign of King Rama IV this spot was made famous as the site he chose to witness a full eclipse of the moon. The king astonished many scholars by predicting the exact timing of the event. Today, you can enjoy the long stretch of white sandy beach here that's lined with pine trees. Waghor is located approximately seven and a half miles (12kms) south of Hua Hin, off the main road.
Hua Hin's airport is located just three miles (five kilometres) north of the city. Four flights per day are operated by SGA Aero from Bangkok to Hua Hin, with a flight time of just over 30 minutes. The Hua Hin Airport is also conveniently located for tourists heading to Cha Am resorts. Flights are competitively priced in comparison to other forms of transportation.
The official language of the country is Thai, although several dialects of the language are spoken in various parts of the country. English is understood and spoken in cities and major tourist destinations. It is also the language used in international business. There are, however, many parts of the country where English is not understood. Other languages spoken include: Chinese, Khmer, Lao and Malay. Thai language and TEFL courses are available.
