This is a very beautiful hotel and a great place to book a trip down the Mekong to Luang Prabang. The hotel owner has recently begun taking groups on the river trip...her arranges early crossing of the border and comfortable transportation on the river to LP. While our trip was not trouble free, he certainly smoothed out the rough edges. Very highly recommended....

Not much choice for hotels in the very quiet town of Chiang saen if one does not belong to the 100-Baht-a-night backpacker phalanx. In this respect, Chiang Saen Hill Hotel is a good choice for someone who likes a little higher standard of comfort. The hotel is situated in a very quiet street a little off the town center. A brisk 5-minute walk brings you to the banks of the Mekong river, though. My room was a tad on the small side but tastefully furnished in warm northern Thai style. The white floor tiles diminished that atmosphere somewhat, though. There was no TV and the phone was only good for calls to the reception downstairs. The fridge was onlys tocked with 2 bottles of drinking water, but I could easily buy some beer, softdrinks and other necessities just across the street from the hotel at a local grocery shop. There also is a small open-air bar right next to the shop where one can indulge in a few bottles of the amber liquid and - if absolutely necessary - buy some local handicrafts. During my stay I never have seen the in-house restaurant open. There was no room menu. But the "breakfast" in the morning (included in the room price) was absolutely horrible consisting of 2 fried eggs, a couple of strips of greasy bacon and a cup of Nescafe. Yuck! Still, the quiet and pleasant location of the hotel was worth the stay and the very reasonable price for the room was still good value for what I got. I would stay there again.

Good hotel, a bit far from town, about 1 km, but nice and clean. Only the shower with electric heater is bad.
