Chiang Rai is located approximately 200 km northeast of its more popular neighbour, Chiang Mai. It was the first capital of Lanna Thai (Kingdom of a Million Rice Fields). The province contains a wealth of natural attractions including dramatic and thunderous waterfalls, where the entire family can have fun. Chiang Rai is also renowned for its stunning mountainous ranges and verdant landscapes. Hiking and trekking enthusiasts will have fantastic opportunities to see some of the most scenically breathtaking areas in Thailand. One of the most well known attractions is the intricately designed Wat Rong Kun (The white temple). This temple is the only temple in the region that has been custom designed and hand painted. Its houses numerous statues of figures based on religious beliefs. The province also has a pleasant selection of hotel accommodation as well as a plethora of shops and stalls selling everything from handicrafts and artworks to silver and antiques.
