AMUSEMENT PARKS These are always favourites with the kids and Bangkok has a number of such establishments. One of the more popular of these is the Siam Park, which has a number of pools, water slides and a wave pool, located around 10km outside Bangkok.
Around January to February, Bangkok holds the Ban Thawai Wood Carving Fair. Here one can watch demonstrations of woodcarving and other local handicrafts as well as purchase the products produced. The work is that of Northern Thais and tends to be more intricate than that of their southern cousins. It’s well worth a visit.
Chinatown is located east of Hualaphong Station. There are plenty of temples and traditional-style Chinese shop-houses, with different shopping areas specialising in different things.
Bangkok’s new international airport, Suvarnabhumi (“Soo-wan-na-boom”) is located 30km east of downtown Bangkok. It is approximately a 45 to 60 minute drive from downtown Bangkok, depending on traffic.
The traditional Thai greeting gesture is called a wai (hands placed together in a prayer position at the chest, chin or forehead). There are various levels of wais, the best is to just imitate the wai that is being given to you, or place your hands at your chest. Most Thais are not accustomed to shaking hands, but more are adopting this western approach when meeting foreigners.
