
New Year’s Day: despite celebrating traditional Thai New Year in April, there are still many festivities held around the Gregorian calendar’s New Year. As the clock strikes midnight, the city comes alive with fireworks and revelry.

Bang Sai Arts and Crafts Fair: this annual fair showcases a number of products from H.M. the Queen’s SUPPORT programme. You can enjoy shopping, watching demonstrations of traditional craft making and enjoy traditional entertainment.

Macha Bucha: is a very important Buddhist holiday, which falls on the full moon in February. It sees an annual meeting of the principal Buddhist monks and is a national holiday where local Thais visit their local temples to make merit.

Songkran: is Thailand’s traditional New Year. This is effectively a week-long water festival which turns into a national water fight. It is great fun and people young and old take to Ayutthaya’s streets to partake in this cult celebration.

Coronation Day: is a public holiday which commemorates the day that the king of Thailand took to the throne. There are many tributes to the King and everyone dons their yellow t-shirt in respect.

Khao Phansa Day: this is the proper name for Buddhist Lent and sees monks take to their temples for a three-month stay during the rainy season. Thai’s will bring the monks parcels containing food and essentials in the hopes of making merit.

H.M. Queen’s Birthday: is celebrated in style with parades, tributes and concerts held in honour of the Queen. It is also mother’s day in Thailand.

Chulalongkorn Day: this is a day for Thais to remember one of their most important kings, King Chulalongkorn.

Loy Kratong: sees floating lanterns along the river and lanterns being sent into the sky. It is one of the most beautiful festivals of the year. Parties, fireworks and revelry also take place.

H.M. King’s Birthday: the King of Thailand is revered throughout the country and his birthday is a celebration of his life and work. Flags fly, tributes are given and patriotism is high. The country grinds to a halt on this day, which is also father’s day.

Ayutthaya World Heritage Site Celebrations: this annual event sees the city celebrate its past with displays of traditional culture, dances and musical performances. There is also a fireworks and light display.
