Honeymoon Havens

Honeymoon Havens

Planning a honeymoon is not easy. It is the one holiday that you want to ensure is perfect. The dream honeymoon is where the newlywed husband and wife both adore the destination and have a holiday to remember for the rest of their lives. Many couples choose tropical island destinations because of the romantic pictures they conjure up - walking arm-in-arm along a golden beach, sitting under swaying palm trees sipping a cocktail, sharing a hammock for an afternoon nap.

One of the popular islands for newlyweds is Phuket in Thailand. This beautiful island has a wealth of magnificent resorts that cater for young lovers and couples who want to get away from it all. From resorts with small bungalows overlooking the beach to five-star resorts with luxurious villas...Phuket has it all.

However, there is one corner of the island that is fast becoming a mecca for honeymoon couples. Naithon Beach, located in the north of the island, has been the secret destination of regular visitors to the island for decades. Here the beach remains pristine and quiet. Little shops that have been there for years line the one road which runs along the beachfront.

Some holidaymakers have discovered it purely by chance, on taking a detour from the main route leading from Phuket International Airport to the bustling resorts in the south of the island, like Patong Beach or the superb five-hotel Laguna complex. But, besides one or two small bungalow resorts, Naithon has managed to remain one of the last outposts of the simple island life. Even now, with four magnificent new resorts on surrounding beaches and the hills surrounding it, Naithon is still the quietest, cleanest beach on Phuket.

The first luxury hotel to open near Naithon was the Andaman White Beach Resort. Nestled amid rubber plantations and lush coconut groves in a secluded bay with all rooms overlooking the sea, it offers total seclusion and peace in a classy environment. This is the type of resort where you divide your time between your villa and the beach. You don't even have to venture far to eat. Meals are served at the poolside or on a deck on the beach, all within a few footsteps of the resorts rooms and villas.

The best accommodation comes in the form of beachfront villas. Here you can lie on a daybed on your patio and watch the waves roll in a few metres away. If you want to be even closer, you can retire to one of the hammocks strung between the palm trees in the garden or head for one of the beach loungers. For honeymooners, this is perfection. The bedrooms boast huge double beds, televisions with multiple satellite channels and private DVD players.

Only a few years back, it would have been difficult imagining another hotel in the area being able to match Andaman White Beach, but Trisara has done that. Set a kilometre or so to the south, this hotel has already established itself as the island’s most exclusive resort. When the King and Queen of Sweden were in Thailand recently, they decided to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary in a private villa at Trisara.

Located on a gentle slope between two headlands are the resort’s 42 pool suites and villas. Over 40 acres of garden and steep hills on either side ensure absolute privacy for guests. Days can be spent alongside the magnificent white beach or at one of the pools.

This is the type of resort where politicians, Hollywood stars and other celebrities go to "get away". With private pools and in-suite dining options, you never need venture out. But if you do, the hotel has a fleet of cars ready to whisk you off to Phuket's latest nightclub or hotspot. With a spa, library, restaurants and bars, Trisara has everything a honeymoon couple could wish for.

One nice touch is that guests can use the hotel's free mini iPods to download music from thousands of albums - from jazz and Latin to classical and hip-hop. And, in case you wish to share your selection with your loved one, the iPod connects to the BOSE system in the rooms. That's what makes a resort like Trisara stand out from the pack.

Both Andaman White Beach and Trisara have their own health spas, but one of the newer resorts has made its spa the central focus of its resort. Just over the hill from Naithon, overlooking Nai Yang beach, the Arahmas Resort and Spa offers luxury rooms and spa treatments in a superb resort environment.

From rooms with their own pool access to the beachfront villas, the resort specialises in providing its guests with unobtrusive service and privacy. Wireless telephones, personal DVDs and a library keep you entertained, while the signature treatments in the Grand Spa will leave you feeling refreshed.

Here you can take a long walk along Nai Yang beach or venture into the little village that lines the road to the resort to shop at one of the establishments that sells basic provisions with grateful smiles. When you get back, sink into a spa bath or swimming pool and enjoy a cocktail or tea and cake. A holiday at Arahmas is about being pampered and cared for.

The only new resort actually located at Naithon beach is Naithonburi Beach Resort, a sprawling Thai-style hotel just behind the row of shops lining the seafront. The sea is only a few minute's walk away and you can take full advantage of the local bars and restaurants.

Rooms, which are built around a massive central swimming pool, are spacious and well-equipped. This new resort is perfect for families, but also offers young couples the space to enjoy their own company. Another big advantage is that Naithonburi offers great deals, making it more affordable for people who have a limited budget.

It doesn’t really matter which of the resorts you choose, you will still get a taste of island life. Watch water buffaloes roam through the fields and listen to the birds chattering in the trees along the beach. And, when you feel sleepy, head for your beautiful hotel room and marvel at how great life can be.
