Top-selling Hotels
by Peter Graham
As you scroll through our listings of hotels in search of an ideal place to stay, do you wonder which hotels our customers are choosing? Whatever the reason - location, price or name brand - certain hotels are perennially popular. At the start of each year we announce the top sellers for the previous year. Discover which hotels are the most sought-after, read our unbiased customer reviews and then you can make an informed choice for your next booking.
At the top of the 2006 list were two hotels in Bangkok and two in Hong Kong - all four being value-for-money choices in very popular destinations. In Bangkok the best sellers were the Ambassador Hotel and the Manhattan Hotel, while in Hong Kong the Charterhouse Hotel and the Wharney Hotel came out tops.
Across the globe, other popular hotels among HotelTravel.com customers were the Outback Pioneer Hotel and Lodge in Ayers Rock, Australia, the Sheraton Rio Hotel & Towers in Rio de Janeiro, the Peace Hotel in Shanghai, the historic Russell Hotel in London and the Saint Louis Bastille Hotel in Paris.
Overall, three-star hotels offering affordable rates were highly sought-after, but there was also a new trend towards luxury hotels. Many customers are opting for the discounted rates at five-star hotels and resorts which represent great value. An example of this is that one of the most expensive hotels in the world, the Burj al Arab in Dubai, was one of the top 10 selling hotels in the Emirates. In Hungary, the top-selling hotel was the Inter-Continental Budapest and in Egypt it was the Nile Hilton in Cairo.
In Asia, there was an especially strong move to five-star hotels, which offer superb service and spectacular rooms at very affordable prices. Top 10 choices in Asian countries included some of the world's best hotels. Among these were the Le Meridien Angkor Hotel at Siem Reap, Cambodia, the Mandarin Oriental in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the Ritz Carlton in Bali, the Dusit Hotel Nikko in Manila and the Portman Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Shanghai.
Although HotelTravel.com only started providing accommodation in the United States this year, our great rates on airport hotels have already proved to be irresistible. Among these were Four Points by Sheraton Los Angeles International Airport Hotel and the Holiday Inn Miami International Airport Hotel. The top-seller in Las Vegas was the Riviera Hotel & Casino and in Orlando it was the Sheraton World Resort.
In Europe, the heaviest demand was for affordable hotels in areas considered prime locations - in city centres and close to railway stations and airports. In France, the most sought-after locations were the inner-city arrondissements around the Arc de Triomphe, the Champs Elysées and the Montmartre.
In Italy, hotels in Milan were very popular with business travellers, with Rome in second place. The number one spot went to the four-star Dei Cavalieri Hotel in Milan, which offers comfortable bedrooms only a stone's throw from the Duomo Square in the historical centre of the city.
Spain was back in fashion in 2006, with hotels in Valencia, Barcelona and Madrid popular choices. The big sellers included the Astoria Palace in Valencia, the Expo Hotel in Barcelona and the five-star Westin Palace Hotel in Madrid. In the Netherlands, five of the top ten sellers were located near the country's ever-popular Schipol Airport. However, in Ireland, Dublin garnered the most bookings, but the most popular choice overall was the Clarion Hotel in Cork.
The most popular country overall was, once again, Thailand. The capital city, Bangkok, continued to attract business and leisure travellers. While many opted for three and four-star economical choices in the Sukhumvit shopping area, a growing number of people are choosing more upmarket hotels in the City of Angels. The most popular of these in 2006 was the Bangkok Marriott Resort and Spa, a luxurious five-star retreat on the Chao Praya River.
In Thailand's holiday playground of Phuket the most sought-after choices included the Amari Coral Beach Resort, the Holiday Inn Phuket and the Burasari Resort. In Chiang Mai, the top selections included the Central Duangtawan Hotel and Tamarind Village, a Lanna-style resort.
The second most popular destination was scintillating Hong Kong, where rooms are always at a premium. Included in this year's Top 10 were the Kimberley Hotel, the Renaissance Kowloon Hotel and the Kowloon Hotel. With value-for-money hotels still in demand, the trend towards upgrading accommodation is showing here as well.
There was also an increase in demand for rooms in Macau, which is undergoing massive expansion. A popular choice there was the four-star Beverly Plaza Hotel. Over the next two years, a host of new hotels are due to open in both Hong Kong and Macau, which we will add to our portfolio as soon as they are available.
