With thousands of hotels to choose from, HotelTravel.com customers are spoilt for choice when it comes to deciding where to stay. However, certain hotels remain firm favourites among our discerning and cost-conscious travellers. As we enter 2006, we look back at the top-selling hotels last year.
For the second year in a row, the most popular choice of all HotelTravel.com travellers was the Ambassador Hotel in Thailand's capital city, Bangkok. With 750 rooms, it provides affordable accommodation along fashionable Sukhumvit Road and has great connections with the rest of the city by skytrain. Other popular hotels in Bangkok included the Novotel Lotus Hotel, the Comfort Suites Airport Hotel and the Novotel Bangkok on Siam Square. The top five-star hotel was the Bangkok Marriott Resort and Spa.
The best sellers in large Asian cities were generally mid-market hotels which offer great value for money. These included the Allson Genesis Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, the Novotel Peace Hotel in Beijing, the YMCA Salisbury Hotel in Hong Kong and the Grand Central Hotel in Singapore.
However, a number of five-star luxury hotels were also among the most popular choices. These included the Dusit Nikko Hotel in Manila, the Pudong Shangri-La Hotel in Shanghai, the Le Meridien in New Delhi and the Hilton Colombo in Sri Lanka. In Kuala Lumpur, sought-after five-star hotels were the Mandarin Oriental and the JW Marriott.

Other popular choices were the Saint Gothard Hotel in Nice, the Radisson SAS Hotel in Edinburgh and the Taverna Hotel in Budapest. In London, many customers opted for the Royal National Hotel, located off Russell Square.
The top-selling beach hotel was the Grand Mirage Resort in Bali. This low-rise beachfront resort is located in tropical gardens on the tip of Nusa Dua Beach. With modern facilities and a classical Balinese atmosphere, it offers a great beach holiday at affordable prices. The hotel has an excellent spa, a large beachfront swimming pool and many sporting facilities.
Runner-up was the Langkawi Village Resort in Malaysia. Located on a 400 metre stretch of sand at Pantai Tengah, the resort has panoramic views of nearby islands. Other top-selling resorts were the Bayview Beach Resort in Penang, the Bali Hyatt in Bali, the Sheraton Langkawi Beach Resort and the Hilton Maldives Resort and Spa on Rangali Island. The top resort in Koh Samui was the Banana Fan Sea Resort, while the Hard Rock Hotel in Pattaya proved a hit with holidaymakers.
In Australia the most popular resort was the Islander Resort Hotel on the Gold Coast, while the spectacular Friday's Resort on Boracay Island came out tops in the Philippines. In Europe, the top-seller in a coastal destination was the Vincci Condal Mar Hotel in Barcelona's Olympic Port.

Tanjong Jara Resort *****
Terengganu, Malaysia

Get free nights at one of Malaysia's most exclusive resorts, the Tanjong Jara on the country's unspoilt eastern coast. The design was inspired by the indigenous 'istanas', elegant, wooden palaces that indulged the Malay Sultans of long ago and exudes an ambiance of an ancient palace, an experience that is 'unmistakably Malay'. The resort facing the South China Sea and the beautifully-appointed guest rooms overlook a long stretch of beach.
