Taichung International Airport is situated around 12 miles from the city centre in the CCK Air Force Base’s western corner. Contrary to its title, the airport handles mainly domestic flights and flights to other Republic of China destinations. However, international flights do operate regularly from a small number of overseas destinations.
Airlines operating flights to the airport include Cathay Pacific, Dragonair, Mandarin Airlines, EVA Air, Uni Air, Hong Kong Airlines and Hong Kong Express Airways. There are daily flights from Hong Kong and flights from Ho Chi Minh City and Seoul-Incheon by Mandarin Airlines. Regular connections are also maintained with the larger airport at Taipei, and the journey between the two takes about 40 minutes by air.
The airport operates a single terminal with basic facilities which include vending machines for drinks and snacks, public telephones, two ATMs, a restaurant, a first-aid room and disabled persons’ toilets. Taxis are available at the airport to transport passengers to their hotel.

Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, located in the capital city of Taipei, is the chief gateway to the island of Taiwan. The airport maintains connections with a large number of international destinations including major cities in South and Southeast Asia. National carrier China Airlines serves a variety of European cities including Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Rome and Vienna, plus other major international cities such as Brisbane, Sydney, Vancouver and Los Angeles. EVA Air, Northwest Airlines, Singapore Airlines and United Airlines also serve a variety of North American cities.
The airport operates two terminals which are well equipped with passenger facilities including a bank, post office, ATMs, shops, restaurants, internet stations, a business centre, a nursery and prayer rooms.
Various transportation options exist at the airport including Sky and high-speed train, shuttle buses, taxis, and car rentals.

Taichung is located on the western line of Taiwan’s rail network, meaning that all north and southbound trains travel via the city. Regular services connect Taichung with both Taipei and Kaohsiung with the journey taking about three hours from either destination.

Taiwan operates an efficient bus network making it possible to reach Taichung from most major cities on the island. Services call at either of two main stops; Taichung Train Station and Chao Ma. Services are provided by a number of operators including Changhua, Yuanlin, Kuo-Kuang and Dragon bus companies.

Bus services in and around the city are comprehensive and again operated by a number of different companies including Renyou and Fengyuan. Taxis are also widely available and provide metered service. Don’t ride with a driver who refuses to use the meter or claims it is broken.

The alternative to public transportation is to rent a scooter and make your own way around. Motorcycles are cheap to rent but the roads are not for the faint-hearted. The city centre is compact enough to get around on foot although the limited provision of pavements can make walking a challenge.
