Top Things to See

Grab a map of the town, your camera and a sense of adventure and head out on a sightseeing tour of Taichung. The city’s parks are picturesque, while its museums and fine buildings are engaging. For a unique experience, visit the living museum that is Folklore Park in Beitun district.

Chung-shan Park
Dating back to the Ching dynasty, this is one of the oldest nature areas in the city and a popular spot at which locals can seek refuge from the urban jungle. A scenic lake occupies a large part of the park and on it is the Chung-cheng Pavilion, one of the city’s most notable landmarks.

Folklore Park
An insight into traditional Taiwanese life of old is available at Taichung’s Folklore Park, an attractive location situated in Beitun district. Worthy sights within the park include a traditional Taiwanese farmhouse, a Fujian provincial home complete with authentic furnishings, and a recreation of an old-fashioned shopping street featuring a teahouse and a variety of stores that are open for business. A museum housed beneath the Fujian house features exhibits such as traditional costumes, farming implements and household objects.

Luce Chapel
Popularly hailed as one of the island’s most beautiful buildings, Luce Chapel now belongs to Donghai University. The chapel was erected as a memorial to Henry Winters Luce, who passed away in 1941. Gaining entrance to the chapel can be difficult, however, as it’s often closed. The picturesque surroundings in which the chapel sits enhance this historic landmark.

National Museum of Natural Science
The opportunity to visit this museum of international repute is rarely passed up by tourists. A plethora of categorised displays with themes relating to science and the natural world are available for viewing. Be sure to check out the Chinese Science, Global Environment and Life Science halls, which are among the museum’s most interesting sections.

National Museum of Natural Science's Botanical Garden
This fascinating facility is located just across the street from the museum’s chief entrance and is a must for anyone with an interest in plants, flowers and trees, be they native or imported. The main building is home to a simulated tropical rainforest in which the temperature is closely controlled and rain is artificially created. Besides the indoor attractions, there are also some interesting sights in the outdoor garden sections of the facility.

Taichung Metropolitan Park
Another scenic spot enjoyed by the city’s residents and visitors, Taichung Metropolitan Park is located on a hill to the west of the main urban area. The park offers some excellent views of both the city and Taichung’s port.

Wufeng
Within easy driving distance of Taichung is the small village of Wufeng, located at the base of Tiangbi Shan, or Elephant Nose Mountain. This agricultural settlement is still relatively primitive and a far cry from the modern environment that Taichung presents. The drive to the village is scenic and once here, visitors can enjoy the pleasing sights of rice paddies as well as views of the Taichung skyline some distance below.
