Syria Introduction

Syria is home to some of the most spectacular ancient sites in the world. From the Crusaders’ castles to the Roman theatres, there are plenty of opportunities for sightseeing and exploring. For outdoor enthusiast, Syria offers an abundance of activities such as trekking and cycling. For those who prefer to take it easy, you can relax one of the golden beaches or indulge in a spa treatment. A land of surprises and contrasts, Syria is endowed with rugged mountains facing lush green fields, and barren desert bordered by rolling hills and sandy beaches.

Syria is a haven for lovers of ancient history and culture and Syrians are proud of their heritage and antiquities. There are numerous monuments and religious relics on display for all to see. The country’s historic sites provide a fascinating glimpse of Middle Eastern tradition and culture, such as the impressive cities of Damascus and Aleppo.

In Damascus, high-rise buildings contrast with ancient mosques and the bustling traditional souks are more crowded than the many modern shopping centres. Ancient stone walls, complete with turrets and towers, enclose the old city of Damascus, while the history of its sprawling residential areas stretch back to the Middle Ages.

One of the states comprising the Cradle of Civilization, Syria has been continuously inhabited for tens of thousands of years. The mighty Euphrates River crosses the country, rich with history and fertility. The famous desert city of Palmyra, whose ruins are now a United Nations World Heritage site, was a thriving city during the 1st and 2nd centuries A.D.

Syria is a land of contrasts; there are rugged mountains overlooking lush fields and dry arid desert bordered by rolling hills and sandy beaches. However, the biggest contrast is between people’s perception of the country and what it is really like. It is a land full of friendly, hardworking people, many of whom work in thriving cities and have very successful careers. Proud of their heritage, Syrians carry on the traditions that have been handed down for generations.

Eid al Adha
This festival is also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, and remembers the time that God tested Abraham by asking him to sacrifice his son Ismael. During this time, many local people sacrifice sheep and other animals as a gesture to symbolise the sheep that Abraham offered after God declared Ishmael’s sacrifice to be unnecessary.
