Switzerland’s capital is not its largest (Zurich boasts that claim) but it certainly loses nothing on account of its size and if anything, is enhanced by it, presenting an altogether more intimate and informal ambience than is typical of larger European capitals.

Visitors flock to the city at all times of the year, taking advantage of a variety of attractions, some that are dependant on the seasons and others that aren’t. In summer, the warm weather makes seeing the city’s many fascinating sights a pleasurable experience, while come wintertime, the icy chills bring some great snow to the winter sport resorts located close to the city.

Skiing and snowboarding are popular winter pastimes, but at other times of the year, activities such as golf, swimming and cycling can be pursued, making this an ideal destination for lively visitors. For families, the city’s zoo is a good bet on fine days but there are parks and gardens also where picnics, relaxation and games and sports are possible.

Eating out is one of the highlights of any holiday in Bern, with the excellent Swiss-German cuisine promising to satisfy even the most voracious of appetites. With some excellent retail areas in the city centre, visitors can spend the afternoon wandering the shops in order to work up a good appetite for dinner.

Sightseeing attractions are plentiful and include everything from churches to museums to art galleries. Anyone appreciating the contents of UNESCO’s World Heritage list can check out the city’s famous clock tower, located in its historic Old Town district. History and culture enthusiasts, meanwhile, rarely miss out on the chance to visit the popular Einstein House museum.

Like most capital cities, Bern has a well-developed visitor infrastructure which includes good transport and accommodation options. In the latter category are big names as well as a wealth of good quality independent establishments. Prices are typically European but some hostels and budget hotels are available for those on a shoestring.

The city is easy to get to, having its own international airport and maintaining bus and rail connections with other Swiss cities and major destinations in Europe also. Getting around the city is equally easy, with buses and trams providing regular and efficient transportation options. Car hire is available and is a good option for anyone planning extensive travel during his or her trip.

Weather

Bern’s climate is best described as pre-Alpine continental in nature and is characterised by mild to cold weather and frequent rainfall. There are four fairly distinct seasons and June, July and August are the wettest months of the year. Summers, despite the rain, can enjoy warm temperatures with highs reaching the low to mid 20s°C.

The best time to visit Bern depends very much on what kind of holiday you are planning. If you expect your itinerary to be based heavily around sightseeing then you’ll be wanting warm weather, in which case book for some time between May and September but keep in mind the chances of rain from June to August.

If you plan a skiing holiday, then anytime from late December through until March is fine. The best snow-making conditions come in January and February when temperatures can drop to -2 or -3˚C.
