Airports

The international airport serving Basel and the surrounding area is known as Euroairport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (BSL; EAP), and the world’s only airport having two nationalities. The facility was built on French soil and is located about two miles from Basel. The airport is served by several major carriers as well as a growing number of budget airlines.

The airport features two passenger terminals: one for international flights; and the second for domestic travel. There is also a cargo terminal, with separate French and Swiss sections. The airport’s range of facilities for passengers includes: a bank, currency exchanges (open 24-hours), ATMs, bars, snack bars and restaurants and many duty-free outlets. There are lifts, telephones and toilets designed for passengers with disabilities.

Transport from the airport to Basel and the region is available by bus or taxi service. There is bus service operating to the SNCF railway station in Mulhouse; and BVB buses and Air Line buses operating to Basel centre. For passengers travelling to Freiburg, Südbaden Bus provides service on this route. If you’re driving, the airport can be accessed by taking the A35 motorway from Mulhouse and Basel. Taxis are readily available from in front of the arrivals area on the Swiss and the French sides and parking is available in more than 2,000 short-term and 5,000 long-term spaces. An airport information counter is located in the arrivals area, between the Swiss and French sides of the terminal.

Public Transport

The city’s network of public transportation is good and the cost of transport is relatively inexpensive. Tickets for the buses or trams must be purchased at a station in advance and an unlimited travel ticket is available. You can comfortably cover Basel on foot, as most of the city’s attractions are near the ancient centre and along the Rhine River. For exploring farther afield, trams are a good bet, as taxis tend to quite costly.

You’ll find two train stations in Basel. The enormous SBB is the main station and most of it located in Switzerland. If you arrive here, you’ll be required to go through passport control before entering the main station. A good number of fast trains from Germany serve Basel SBB; but plenty of others, including local services from Germany, terminate at Basel’s Badischer Bahnhof. These are services operated by Deutsche Bahn, arriving within German territory that is actually in Kleinbasel.

Getting around the city on bicycle can also be a good option. Bicycles are available for hire in the centre, at a kiosk located near the rail station’s information booth.

Basel features a benefit for all of its hotel guests known as a ‘Mobility Ticket,’ allowing unlimited use of the city’s public transport at no cost.
