International Transport
Airports Visitors arriving in Stockholm by air will arrive in the city via the Stockholm-Arlanda Airport which is located 42kms north of the city. The airport, which has four passenger terminals, offers plentiful facilities which include essentials such as ATMs, banks and bureaux de change, as well as ample dining and shopping outlets.
Ground transportation from the airport is excellent with an extensive bus service providing the cheapest and most widely reaching option connecting the airport with a large number of destinations across the city. Some 300 services a day are in operation with those travelling to the city centre running at a frequency of every 10 minutes at peak times.
For slightly quicker transfers, the Arlanda Express train service connects the airport with the city at 10 minute intervals during peak times and 15 minutes at all other times.
Those with reservations at one of the city’s reputable hotels will invariably be able to take advantage of a free shuttle service between the airport and the establishment of their choice. Visitors are advised to check the availability of hotel shuttles at the time of booking.
Visitors wishing to travel in real style can hire a limousine from the airport while those wanting similar convenience with considerably less frills can take a taxi from outside any of the airport’s four terminals. Car hire companies are also on hand in the airport for those visitors wishing to make their own way to their onward destinations.
Domestic Transport
Stockholm’s Metro system, or tunnelbana as it is locally known, provides the fastest and most convenient means of getting around the city with services running from 05:00 to 01:00 during the week and later at weekends. There are three main lines (Green, Red and Blue) which cover a large part of the city and also connect with the commuter train service. The Green Line covers a total of 49 stations, the Red Line covers 36 stations and the Blue Line covers 20 stations. Stations can be identified by the logo featuring a blue ‘T’ on a white background.
If none of the Metro stations are close to your destination, then you might find the city’s bus service more appropriate. Regular services run from 06:00 to 0:00 while some services continue on into the night with limited frequency. Routes cover the entire city centre as well as surrounding areas and fares are based on a zone system. The bus service has a reputation for efficiency and reliability.
Trams are operated mainly for nostalgia and for visitors, but do provide limited coverage of the city including a large number of key city sights.
Taxis are ubiquitous in the city and easily identifiable by their distinctive yellow colour. Taxis can be hailed in the street or booked by telephone from any of a large number of companies operating. Booking ahead is wise if you are operating to a strict schedule and can be done through any of the following: Taxi Stockholm (+46 15 00 00), Taxi Kurir (+46 30 00 00) and Top Cab (+46 33 33 33).
