Sightseeing in Malmo is a mixed affair, with visual treats both old and new comprising the most popular sights to take in on a city tour. Malmo Castle is the one place that no tourist wants to miss, not only for its splendid exterior but also for the wealth of fascinating viewing material contained within. In stark contrast to the classical architectural style of the castle is the modern magnificence of the eight-kilometre long Oresund Bridge.

Malmo Castle
Malmohus, aka Malmo Castle, is undoubtedly the city’s most famous landmark and sightseeing attraction. Hailed as Scandinavia’s oldest Renaissance castle, this splendid structure was first built in the 1400s but later sustained damage and was rebuilt in the early years of the 1500s. Having served as a prison during the 1700s and 1800s, the castle is now home to some of the city’s best museums, including the popular Municipal Museum.

Oresund Bridge
Still a relatively new addition to the city, having only been officially opened to traffic in July 2000, the Oresund Bridge is a masterpiece of modern engineering and one of the city’s most significant contemporary landmarks. The bridge stretches a breathtaking 7,845 metres and connects Malmo with the Danish city of Copenhagen.

Stortorget Square
Considered by most to be the city’s heart and the focal point of local life, Stotorget Square can be found just a short distance from both the train station and the ferry port and is easily reached on foot from most of the major hotels. Historically, the square is of great significance, having been an important business centre during the 1500s. A statue of King Karl X Gustaf is located in the middle of the square, while in its perimeter are a variety of shops and restaurants.

St Peter’s Church (St Petri Kyrka)
Another of the city’s major landmarks, St Peter’s Church is a magnificent 13th-century building situated close to Stortorget Square in the city centre. The church exterior features typical Baltic Gothic architectural influences, while inside the style is fairly stark and more typically Swedish. Highlights of the interior include the excellent stained glass window and the huge 15-metre wide altar.

Torup Castle
Located just outside of the city, but easily reached by hire car, Torup Castle is the focal point of the small village of Torup. The structure dates to the 1500s and is set in some pleasant gardens that provide an ideal place in which to relax for an hour or so after perusing the castle interior. There are bus tours every Sunday to Torup from the centre of Malmo.
