Outdoor Activities

Malmo’s large collection of parks make it a popular destination with family visitors and outdoor enthusiasts alike, providing spaces for picnics, relaxation, games and sports. On wet, cloudy or especially cold days, a trip to the city’s Toy Museum is a popular option. If you plan your visit for the summer season, it’s the beach at Ribban that’ll be your number one daytime destination.

Toy Museum (Leksaksland)
Adults and children alike will appreciate the exhibits and displays at Malmo’s Toy Museum, a famous attraction in the city since 2005. The museum’s collection is diverse and includes dolls and figurines of characters from popular culture as well as model railways, toy cars and various mechanical objects. The museum has one room in which the toys are not in display cabinets and are available for younger visitors to play with.

Parks
Known as the ‘City of Parks’, Malmo is packed with greenbelt areas that are ideal for families to enjoy summer picnics in or for active visitors to enjoy a variety of sports or physical pursuits. Among the best parks in Malmo are Kungdparken, the oldest in the city; Pildammsparken, the largest in the city and Slottsparken, famous for its sculpture collection.

Folkets Park
Otherwise known as the People's Park, this park is worthy of a mention in its own right on account of the mixed selection of attractions it offers. Besides a small selection of traditional fairground rides, the park offers various theatrical performances on the Children’s Stage, as well as a modest zoo that’s home to spiders, crocodiles, snakes, monkeys and kangaroos among other animals. For very young visitors, the park offers pony rides.

The beach features an open-air swimming pool, for those fancying a proper swim, while the promenade that runs along its edge is the ideal place for joggers, cyclists and rollerbladers.

Cultural Activities

Malmo is by no means short of attractions suitable for visitors with cultural leanings and whether it’s art in its many forms or local history and heritage that most captures your attention, you’ll find this popular visitor destination has something of appeal. The premier cultural venue has to be Malmohus, the city’s historic castle, a building that’s home to a variety of fascinating museums and galleries.

Malmo Art Museum
Situated inside Malmohus, the city’s castle, is the Art Museum, a facility that features the country’s largest permanent collection of Nordic art, as well as hosting a variety of temporary and visiting exhibitions. Highlights in the international displays include the collection of Russian oil paintings, while notable Swedish works include those by Lars Arrhenius, Henrik Olesen, Olafur Eliasson and Annika Strom.

Dining & Shopping

Local cuisine is hearty fare based heavily on protein, fat and carbohydrate-rich foods prepared without abundant herbs or spices and offering appeal in its simplicity. The smorgasbord is a popular feature on many restaurant menus, offering diners the chance to enjoy a wide variety of foods in a single platter. Typically, a smorgasbord features fish such as salmon and pickled herrings, meatballs, fried potato, eggs and chunky slices of bread.

Malmo offers a wide selection of restaurants, in spite of the fact that dining at home is more the norm for its residents. The Old Town district is one of the best areas to head to find eateries, with establishments located here offering everything from local fare to the cuisines of countries such as Iran, India, China and Japan as well as a variety of European countries. For the most concentrated selection of eating venues, try the city squares of Stortorget and Lilla Torg.

Stortorget and Lilla Torg are also good places to head to for shopping and together with Sodergatan, Gustav Adolfs Torg, Sodra Forstadsgatan and Triangeln, comprise the city’s main retail district. With most of this area pedestrianised, shopping is a pleasurable experience, especially in the summer season when the weather is fine and the outdoor bars and eateries in the squares add a lively atmosphere.

Shops in this district are many and varied, covering everything from major department stores to unique independent retailers. Prices are typically European so you’re unlikely to find any major bargains but don’t let that put you off trying all the same. A short distance from this main shopping district is Mollevangen, another retail and dining area that’s renowned for its colourful décor and pleasant ambience.
