Gothenburg has all types of attractions that will appeal to all types of visitors, from busy city thoroughfares and squares to impressive museums, parks and gardens. If you prefer to wander and see where your feet take you, have a walk along Avenyn, Gothenburg’s main street, and take in Gotaplatsen Square.

Avenyn
Avenyn (Avenue) is Gothenburg’s main thoroughfare and is ideal for exploring on foot. It used to be known as Kungportsavenyn and runs from Kungportsplatsen to Gotaplatsen, taking in many interesting sights and attractions. Chief among these are a statue of Karin Boye, the well known Swedish author, and the City Library, while many cafés and bars also reside along the Avenyn.

Gotaplatsen Square
Gotaplatsen square lies along Avenyn and is a major Gothenburg highlight. The square hails from the 1920s and is home to the likes of the Gothenburg Museum of Art and the City Theatre. Be sure to take in the views from the roof of the art museum. Poseidon is another must-see attraction in Gotaplatsen square, but be warned; if you are single and photograph it you will remain so.

Great Synagogue
Gothenburg’s Great Synagogue can be found on the thin Ostra Larmgatan street and was famously Gothenburg's first synagogue. It burnt down but was rebuilt at Kyrkogatan in 1855. Services are on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings and tourists are welcome to attend. Trams arrive direct form Brunnparken. Phone: +46 31 177 245.

Horticultural Society Park (Tradgardsforeningen)
The Horticultural Society Park is even nice to visit in the winter due to the Palmhuset’s (Palm House’s) tropical temperatures. The park itself is across from Central Station and features a huge rosarium along with the Palm House, which was inspired by London's Crystal Palace. There is also a butterfly house here. Maritiman
Maritiman is the world's biggest floating museum of ships and consists of 19 boats of all sizes. It is moored next to Packhuskajen in the heart of the city and the highlight is the former military destroyer Smaland. All the vessels in Maritiman are now museums where you can learn all about destroyers, mine-layers, U-boats, and fireboats. Phone: +46 31 105 950; www.maritiman.se

Masthuggskyrkan
The Masthuggskyrkan is one of Gothenburg’s most important churches. It was designed by famed Swedish architect Sigfrid Ericsson and although it has a plain exterior, inside are many Viking-style ornaments as well as superior acoustics. The views from the lookout tower are worthy of a visit to the church alone. Phone: +46 31 731 9230.

Gothenburg Pass: provides free admission to many of the city's museums and attractions as well as cheap transport and free parking options. Day passes or 48-hour passes can be had from hotels, newsagents, some shops and from the tourist office.
